This is Me Smiling Poster
This is Me Smiling Poster
Our Balkan Legends collection brings new life to iconic Balkan artworks, blending timeless beauty with a splash of modern humor. This piece reimagines Katarina Ivanović’s renowned Self Portrait, adding a cheeky, contemporary twist for a look that’s as bold as it is timeless.
Original Artwork: Self Portrait
Artist: Katarina Ivanović
Katarina Ivanović is celebrated as one of the first female artists in the Balkans, breaking barriers in the 19th century with her pioneering approach to portraiture and still-life painting. Born in Serbia, Ivanović’s work radiates a strength and poise that set her apart in an era when women were rarely seen in the world of fine art. Her portraits are deeply introspective, capturing an air of mystery and resilience that has made her an enduring symbol of Balkan cultural heritage and feminine strength.
Balkanish Edition: Self Portrait
In this Balkanish Edition, we’ve added a playful twist to Ivanović’s famously serious expression with the bold, hot pink phrase: ""This is me smiling."" Known for her composed and introspective gaze, Ivanović’s self-portrait reveals an elegance and strength that almost dares the viewer to guess her thoughts. Our modern overlay nods to the subtle humor in her expression—a reminder that even the most serious faces hide their own stories. It’s the perfect piece for anyone who’s ever heard, “I am smiling on the inside!” This playful addition brings out both the depth and wit of the Balkan spirit, creating an artwork that’s as iconic as it is relatable.

Meet the Founders. Maria (Romanian) and Danica (Serbian) met in university and immediately bonded over the same thing: being from the Balkans and fiercely proud of it. They shared a longing to keep those traditions, humor, and identity alive in their everyday lives abroad.
After years of searching for a brand that truly reflected what it meant to live between two worlds and finding nothing that captured that feeling, they decided to create it themselves. That’s how Balkanish was born.
These aren't mass produced products, each item is thoughtfully designed by the founders themselves.
